HRK Eagles is a competitive home school sports program based in Lake County, Illinois. We offer basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, and flag football. Our programs are for Junior High and High School aged athletes.

HRK Eagles 2019 Co-Ed Cross Country Team

"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out."--Proverbs 10:9

" 'Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame. Do not fear disgrace; you will not be humiliated....Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be ahaken nor my covernant of peace be removed,' says the LORD, who has compassion on you."--Isaiah 54:4a-4b, 10

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the power of human legs; the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love."--Psalm 147:10-11

Lots of enjoying the beautiful scenery God has created while pushing yourself to go farther (literally) and having fun. No field events, no short distances, no running around a track--just feeling the freedom of running in nature with your friends.

We're offering an extended HRK Cross Country season again this year, featuring races outside our conference during and after the regular season ends. It was a blast travelling last fall to other meets and meeting other homeschool cross country teams. Let's do it again!

Registration for the 2019 season is open from now through August 10th.

It's going to be an exciting season. Come join us!

** Please  before registering with questions or if you would like to assist with coaching. **

Athletes must register by the registration closing date:  11:59 pm on August 10th.

Who:  Full-time and part-time homeschooled boys and girls who are ages 10-18 (or 4th-12th grades). (Please note that there are specific guidelines as to what "homeschooled athletes" are. Visit the eligibility section of the HRK Eagles Sports Handbook page for more information.) We allow 3rd graders to be on our team, although they cannot participate in the conference meets (cross country games).

When:  August 8th through October 19th. (The August 5th practice has been cancelled, due to the coaches' unavailability.) Practices will be three times a week, with meets starting in early September. High school meets this season will be held on Wednesdays. Meets for 4th-8th graders are usually held on Tuesdays.

Where:  Practice is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. outdoors at local forest preserves. On Mondays and Thursdays, we will meet at Nippersink Forest Preserve. On Fridays, we will meet at Old School Forest Preserve for hill work.

Fee:  $60 for athletes in 4th-12th grades; $30 for athletes in 3rd grade. (The reduced fee for 3rd graders is because they do not particpate in most cross country meets.) The registration fee will NOT include a team uniform shirt--which costs around $22 and can be ordered through the HRK Eagles Team Store. (More details are included on the Equipment/Uniforms page.) This shirt is yours to keep for future seasons and is also used for HRK Eagles Track and Field. The coaches will review uniform requirements at the parent-athlete meeting.

Register:  The deadline for registering is 11:59 p.m. on August 10th. Please before registering if you have questions or would like to help coach the team. We are happy to answer questions and are always looking for people to join our coaching team. (No experience is necessary and assistant coaches receive a generous discount for their athletes as a way of saying, "Thank you".)

Schedule:  As meets are still being determined, a tentative schedule will be available after program registration closes. (The high school meets are already confirmed.) Meets for 4th-8th graders will be listed on the team's calendar page after they are confirmed.

Equipment/Uniforms:  Please look at the Equipment/Uniforms page to see what you'll need.

Mandatory Parent Meeting:  A mandatory parent meeting will be held during the team practice on August 8th. The coaches will go over team information, tentative meet schedule, volunteer sign-ups, athlete expectations, uniform requirements, and answer questions athletes and families may have.

End of Season Party:  TBD, but probably around Friday, October 25th, and probably at the Village Church of Gurnee.

Weather:  The team practices outdoors--rain or shine. (Exceptions are occasionally made for torrential downpours, lightning, and high heat indexes. Generally speaking, though, we run no matter what the weather.) If a practice is canceled, you will be notified by 2:00 p.m. that day. Most meets will not be canceled, due to rescheduling conflicts within the conference. Practices and meets will be canceled through the website, so please make sure you sign up to receive email and text notifications about any changes. Also consider downloading the (free) SI Play app to make communications on the go easier.

Athletes:  All athletes are expected to give the coaches their full attention during practices and at meets. Cell phones are expected to be put away at practices and meets. Athletes must communicate with the coaches in advance if they will not be at practice or a meet. They should come dressed in the team uniform (only at meets) and be ready to participate at both practices and meets. Athletes also need to practice on their own throughout the week.

Parents:  Since HRK is an all-volunteer organization, your help is necessary for our team to function smoothly. At practices, we need parents to volunteer to walk the trails, help time runners, and lead games for the younger athletes who are at home base. At 4th-8th grades meets, parents, older siblings, or other family members are expected to pick spots along the course to act as safety monitors. (They simply make sure athletes run in the right direction and alert coaches if there is an injury.) Although we do not believe in "mandatory volunteering", those meets cannot be run successfully if we do not have two or three people from each team helping out. Let's be the first ones to help out, so our athletes can have quality meets. Becoming an assistant coach is a great way to help our team be the best it can be. (Assistant coaches also receive a registration discount for each of their athletes.)

Information about cross country meets:

4th-6th grades meets are one mile long; 7th-8th grades meets are two miles long. 4th-8th grades athletes run at the same meets, although at different times. (4th-6th grades boys and girls run first, followed afterward by 7th-8th grades boys and girls.) HRK is part of the Northeast Illinois Catholic Conference (NICC), which usually holds four or five meets at various locations during the cross country season. This season's meets are yet to be determined.

9th-12th grade meets are three miles long (about the distance of a 5K race). This season's meets at Lake Forest Academy will be held on Wednesdays:  September 11th, September 18th, and October 2nd.

This year, our team plans on participating in a state homeschool championship meet in October. Other out-of-conference meets will be part of our team's voluntary, extended season. (More details on the team's extended season will be given at the parent-athlete meeting.) Please note that some extended season meets allow 3rd graders and adults to participate in them--making them a great opportunity for our younger athletes (and their parents) to enjoy the sport together. Team members who participated in last year's extended season found it to be challenging and a lot of fun.
